Bomb kills 1 anti-Taliban militiaman in Pakistan (AP)
KHAR, Pakistan ? A Pakistani government official says a bomb has exploded at a market in a tribal region close to the Afghan border, targeting a group of anti-Taliban militiamen. One fighter was killed in the blast.
Tariq Khan, a local administrator in Salarzai town of the Bajur tribal area, says Sunday's bombing also wounded two militiamen and a bystander.
Khan says the attackers detonated the bomb at the town market by remote control.
The Pakistani military has claimed before to have cleared Bajur of insurgents but occasional violence continues.

Codelco seeks to lock in Anglo mining stake (Reuters)
SANTIAGO, Jan 2 ? Chile's state copper giant Codelco said on Monday it exercised a disputed option to buy a stake in Anglo American's south Chile mining assets, but is willing to consider taking a smaller stake if Anglo proposes a formula that safeguards its full value.
Anglo last year announced it had sold a 24.5 percent stake in the assets to Japan's Mitsubishi (8058.T), which Anglo said halved Codelco's potential 49 percent stake. The move surprised world No. 1 copper producer Codelco, along with investors.
Codelco, which viewed Anglo's preemptive move as a snub, said on Monday it exercised its option to buy a 49 percent stake in the south Chilean properties of Anglo American for an estimated price of around $6 billion. At current copper prices, experts say the stake is worth far more.
Anglo responded to Codelco's move by saying it was not obliged to sell any shares in the south Chile properties to Codelco. This sets the stage for a potentially lengthy legal battle.
Anglo's properties in southern Chile include the flagship expansion project Los Bronces, where Anglo has invested around $2.8 billion; the El Soldado mine; the Chagres smelter; and the Los Sulfatos and San Enrique Monolito exploration projects.
Codelco's Chairman Gerardo Jofre said he wanted Anglo to sell the state miner the 24.5 percent stake that is not in contention "now", and said it would fight for the balance.
"We are going after the 49 percent, or its equivalent value in the worst case," Jofre told a news conference. "The economic value can be captured in different ways."
"No-one should misunderstand the fact we are willing to receive a 24.5 percent (stake), or however much is not in dispute. We are going to fight for the other part by all legitimate means," he added.
In November, Anglo American said it sold a stake of the assets in question to Japan's Mitsubishi (8058.T). The company said this meant Codelco now had a right to buy only a 24.5 percent stake.
In December, Anglo filed a writ against Codelco accusing it of breach of contract and seeking to avoid the option altogether.
The legal status of the disputed assets was not immediately clear following the latest salvos, but a protracted legal battle looks increasingly likely.
In November, Codelco Chief Executive Diego Hernandez estimated the legal battle with Anglo could take three to four years to resolve.
Codelco says it made public its intention to exercise the option months ago. Anglo American has said it was within its right to sell a stake to Mitsubishi because Codelco's window to exercise its option only opened this month.
Codelco says Anglo American has reneged on its option contract and has acted in bad faith.
A Chilean court in December maintained a sales freeze on Anglo American's southern Chilean properties, preventing the London-listed miner from selling another part of its coveted assets after Codelco filed an appeal to safeguard them.
Anglo American Sur accounted for 41 percent of Anglo's total copper production in 2010. Analysts have estimated the south Chilean assets make up 17 percent of Anglo American's net asset value -- roughly equivalent to its platinum operations.

DALLAS (AP) ? Penn State's tumultuous year ended with a 30-14 loss to Houston in the TicketCity Bowl on Monday, a dispiriting finish to a season in which coach Joe Paterno was fired as part of a child sex-abuse scandal that shook college sports.
The 24th-ranked Nittany Lions were picked apart by Cougars star Case Keenum, who threw for 532 yards and three touchdowns. Penn State was allowing 162 yards passing per game, but Keenum threw for more than double that by halftime.
"I thought the guys came out and they played hard. It's been a difficult year for them," Penn State interim coach Tom Bradley said. "It just didn't go our way."
Keenum burned the Nittany Lions' veteran secondary with touchdown passes of 40 and 75 yards to build a 24-7 lead by halftime.
It was the school's first bowl game without Paterno as head coach since the 1962 Gator Bowl, a 17-7 loss to Florida.
The Hall of Famer was fired Nov. 9 in the aftermath of the shocking charges against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Longtime defensive coordinator Bradley took over on an interim basis, tasked with guiding a team besieged by media scrutiny.
"These kids have been through hell and back," said assistant coach Jay Paterno, Joe's son.
Bypassed by more prominent bowls, some Nittany Lions (9-4) debated whether to travel to Dallas at all, then vowed they were over getting jilted and focused on stopping No. 20 Houston (13-1).
Turned out Linbacker U. got trampled over by Keenum and Houston's high-octane offense.
Receiver Patrick Edwards burned safety Macolm Willis for a 40-yard touchdown pass from Keenum down the left sideline for a 7-0 lead just 1:52 into the game that often resembled a one-sided track meet. Keenum hit Justin Johnson for an 8-yard TD pass with 2:35 left for a 17-0 lead.
Already the NCAA career leader coming into the game for passing yardage and touchdown passes, Keenum added another record to his impressive resume. His 227 first-quarter passing yards set the record for most passing yards in one quarter in any bowl game, breaking the mark previously held by Louisville's Browning Nagle (223 yards) against Alabama in the first quarter of the 1991 Fiesta Bowl, according to TicketCity Bowl officials.
Penn State All-American defensive tackle Devon Still, already slowed by turf toe, couldn't keep up with Keenum's quick release and Houston's no-huddle attack. The Cougars exploited Penn State's bend-but-don't -break defense across the middle, including Edwards 75-yard touchdown reception up the seam from a scrambling Keenum for a 24-7 lead by halftime.
Keenum finished 45 of 69 passing ? two fewer attempts than the number of offensive plays Penn State ran all afternoon.
Down by 20 midway through the third quarter, cornerback Stephon Morris tried to keep his fellow defenders motivated on the bench with high-fives. The struggling offense without injured starting quarterback Matt McGloin provided a glimmer of hope after backup Rob Bolden connected with Justin Brown for a pretty 69-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 27-14 at 2:38 of the third quarter.
Penn State's defense adjusted to hold the Cougars to just two field goals in the second half, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome, and Bolden threw three second-half interceptions ? two by safety Nick Saenz.
With 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Penn State had already given up 552 yards of total offense to Houston, the most allowed by the Nittany Lions all season.
This wasn't the lasting impression Bradley wanted to leave on the Penn State committee searching for Paterno's replacement. The outgoing Bradley, who is popular with players, is among the candidates who have been interviewed. Acting athletic director David Joyner has said he hopes to have a new coach in place to give him a few weeks to recruit before Feb. 1, when high school seniors can announce their college choices.
Bolden finished 7 of 26 passing for 137 yards, while Stephfon Green ran for 63 yards on 15 carries including a 6-yard scoring run on a direct snap in the second quarter.
It was one of the few times the Cougars' D got tricked. After getting upset 49-28 by Southern Mississippi in the Conference USA title game to lose a chance to play in the BCS, Houston ended the season with an impressive win over a power conference team.
Edwards finished with 10 catches and 228 yards for two touchdowns, while Johnson had 12 catches for 148 yards at the 92,000-seat Cotton Bowl.
The stands were about a half-full on a sunny afternoon that ended with Houston's red-clad fans celebrating and chanting "Houston" as the Cougars won their school record 13th game.

Portland, Maine, mayor undergoes cancer surgery (AP)
PORTLAND, Maine ? The mayor of Maine's largest city has undergone cancer treatment.
Portland officials say Mayor Michael Brennan had successful surgery last weekend to remove a tumor from his small intestine. The tumor was discovered when Brennan sought treatment for abdominal pain.
Brennan will get additional, non-invasive treatment for lesions found on his liver. He says neither chemotherapy nor radiation is needed.
Brennan was released from the hospital Thursday. He intends to return to City Hall next week on a limited basis.
He says his ordeal made him realize that it is important to ensure that all Maine residents have access to health care. He says nearly one in four does not have health insurance.
Brennan won the election last month. He is first popularly-elected mayor in nearly 90 years.

Coach of the Year - Kirk Tavener, Interlake girls soccer
Leaving a school after back-to-back state tournament appearances is never an easy call, but Kirk Tavener knew it was the right one to make.
He was rewarded when his Saints topped Cedarcrest 1-0 for the 2A state title.
After leading the Lindbergh girls on consecutive trips to the 3A girls soccer state tournament, the first trip to state for the school in nearly a decade, Tavener had an opportunity to come back to Interlake, where he had previously spent time with the boys and girls programs.
Before 2011, Interlake had not captured a state championship in a team sport since John Olderud led the Saints to a 4A baseball crown in 1986.
But this time around, the job required far more than basic Xs and Os.
With an infusion of talent in the form of club soccer standout Isabel Farrell, coach Kirk Tavener returned to Interlake this year and led his team all the way to the trophy, besting Cedarcrest at Shoreline Stadium 1-0.
Interlake had a quartet of elite-level club soccer players at the school, but none of the four had ever turned out for the prep team until this year. That group included 2011 conference MVP Isabel Farrell and three others with national and high level club experience.
Rather than allowing animosity over the newcomers develop, Tavener established a family atmosphere around the team and got all of his players to buy-in to the notion that they could have success with a blend of new and old.
