NRA Asks Candidates to Choose: Us or GOP Leadership

The National Rifle Association wants Tennessee legislative candidates to declare whether they will back Republican leaders or the NRA next year if that's what it takes to put a controversial guns-in-parking lots bill up for a full vote, reports the Chattanooga Times-Free Press.

In a gun-issues survey sent to Republican and Democratic candidates, the NRA devotes two of 27 questions to the Safe Commute Act, which cleared most committees but never came up for House and Senate floor votes this year.

The NRA-backed bill, as amended, sought to block public and private employers' ability to bar workers, customers and most visitors from keeping firearms in locked vehicles on company property, provided the weapons are stored out of sight.

The survey asks candidates if they would support the bill and blames Republican leaders for blocking full House and Senate votes this year.

"As a legislator, would you follow the demands of party leadership even if they run contrary to the NRA's legislative agenda?" the survey asks.

In an interview, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulandandam called the survey question "pretty straightforward and self-explanatory."

"At the NRA we're not shy. We don't mince words," he said.

....House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick, R-Chattanooga, said the survey question "sounds like they were asking, 'Will you do what we tell you to do instead of sticking by leadership?'"

...When Democrats controlled the General Assembly, the NRA routinely criticized leadership for bottling up gun bills.

This election cycle, Democrats aren't shedding any tears for the GOP chieftains.

"It's the residue of the Republicans promising the moon [while in the minority], knowing they couldn't deliver anything" Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis said. "And now that they're piloting the space shuttle, it's different."

Switching metaphors, Kyle said, "It's the chickens coming home to roost."

HBT: Padilla says Teixeira should play 'women's sport'

Vicente Padilla fired back at Mark Teixeira after Saturday?s Yankees-Red Sox doublelehader, saying his former Rangers teammate is ?scared to face me? and claiming ?he?d be better off playing a women?s sport.?

Teixeira said Friday that Padilla ?doesn?t have too many friends in the game? and suggested that he be suspended for his head-hunting.

Padilla responded in a Spanish-language interview on NESN:

?The problem is he talks about all the wrong things that others have done, but the things he?s done ? against the Latinos [on the Rangers] ? he doesn?t open his mouth about,? Padilla said. ?He once threatened me and said he was going to hit me with a bat, and that?s when we were playing on the same team.

?And then, he also had problems with Frank Francisco, our closer back then. But he doesn?t talk about that, does he? Then, of course, he goes on and makes those comments about me.?

It sounds like Padilla has some legitimate beefs with Teixeira, but he?s not going into detail here. Plus, whatever the beef, his closing comments won?t go over well.

?In this sport, as competitive ball players, we get pretty fired up,? Padilla said. ?So I think, maybe, [Teixeira] picked the wrong profession. I think he?d be better off playing a women?s sport.?

Just a guess here, but Padilla probably doesn?t watch a lot of women?s sports.

Protesters converge on Romney fundraisers

Protesters marched down the beach in New York's Hamptons to demonstrate against the power of deep-pocketed donors over the political process.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. ? In one of the most sizable shows of force from protestors seen on the campaign trail in weeks, a group of more than 60 demonstrators ? backed by air support in the form of a banner plane ? staged a protest of Mitt Romney's third and final fundraiser here on Sunday.

The fundraiser, at the beachside home of billionaire industrialist David Koch, was to cap a day of fundraising in New York's tony Hamptons communities that could bring in millions of dollars for the campaign's "Victory" fund. It marked Romney's return to the campaign trail after a week of vacation at his summer home in New Hampshire.

Romney and his guests received a loud ? and at times profane ? welcome from dozens of protesters representing organizations from Occupy Long Island to Greenpeace, which largely blocked a section of Meadow Lane to shout, "Shame on You!" (and unprintable variants thereof). The protesters waved signs at those who attended the back-to-back fundraisers hosted by Clifford Sobel, the former U.S. ambassador to Brazil, and later, by Koch.

It was Koch, whose net worth Forbes magazine pegs at $25 billion, who drew most of the protesters? ire. Holding signs that compared the fundraiser's reported ticket price of $50,000 to their annual salaries or even life savings, the protesters decried the power of donors like Koch and his allies over American politics.

When local law enforcement officially cleared the protest, the demonstrators decamped from the street and ? in one of the strangest visual moments of the campaign ? marched nearly a mile down the beach to Koch's house.

Accompanied by a bass drum, horns and even a tenor saxophone, the ragtag band arrived at the stretch of beach behind Koch's house after a 20-minute walk, where roughly a dozen police, Secret Service and Romney staffers stood on the dunes that marked the line of demarcation between the public beach and Koch's private land, and told the protesters they could go no further.

And so they stayed - chanting, singing, and waving signs as a plane buzzed overhead, pulling a banner that read, "Romney has a Koch Problem. MoveOn.Org." While some protestors shouted obscenities as the security watching them from the dunes above (and from a Coast Guard vessel off the coast), this reporter saw no direct confrontations between protestors and authorities.

The climax of the protest event came when the saxophonist, David Intrator, 55, of New York City, led the protesters in a spotty rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," which most of the group joined, though some continued to chant slogans as they sang.

Extreme heat persists, but relief arriving Monday

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A blistering heat wave finally showed signs of letting up across the U.S. Midwest and Northeast on Sunday, bringing relief to millions after days of oppressive temperatures - just as forecasters warned that a new round of record highs could soon bake Western states.

"It's going to start as soon as tomorrow - really everybody in the Rockies is going to see this heat," said Alan Reppert, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.com. He said a high-pressure system developing over the Rockies will cause temperatures of over 100 Fahrenheit (37.7 Celsius) in Salt Lake City by Wednesday.

A slow-moving front of cool air from Canada started pushing down temperatures Sunday from Minneapolis and Detroit to Pittsburgh. The temperature in Chicago, which saw three consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures in the past week, was a pleasant 82F (25C) Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

New York City and Philadelphia still were hot Sunday, although not as oppressive as in days past, with highs in the lower 90s.

Thunderstorms were expected Sunday afternoon from Maryland on south, with storms in the area for most of the week. The storms also will affect the central and southern Plains states, Reppert said.

The blistering heat wave that scorched much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation with triple-digit temperatures has tied or broken nearly 3,400 maximum and minimum temperature records across the country in July, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Dozens of people have died, including a 4-month-old Indiana girl who police say was left in a car outside her home in Greenfield, about 25 miles east of Indianapolis, for an extended period of time when temperatures were above 100F (38C).

Lack of rainfall plus extreme heat is threatening the Midwest's corn crop and leading to wildfires. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report, released Thursday, showed drought encompassing more of the contiguous United States than at any other time since the report began in January 2000.

"The problem for crops - especially the corn crop - has been the heat and lack of rainfall. It is dry across much of the Midwest and Plains and there is no relief in sight," Reppert said.

The decline in temperatures will be slower in the mid-Atlantic because of the slow speed of the Canadian cold front as it moves south, according to AccuWeather.com.

Power outages continue to plague more than 117,000 customers, primarily in West Virginia, some of whom have not had power for more than a week and may not have their service restored for a few more days.

American Electric Power said it had about 59,600 customers out in West Virginia and about 25,600 out in Ohio. FirstEnergy Corp said it had about 32,200 customers out in West Virginia.
