In this trust our Republic was founded. We give devoted homage to the Founding Fathers. They not only proclaimed that the freedom and rights of men came from the Creator and not from the State, but they provided safeguards to those freedoms.

Our Government was created by the people for all the people, and it must serve no less a purpose.

The Republican Party was formed 100 years ago to preserve the Nation's devotion to these ideals.

On its Centennial, the Republican Party again calls to the minds of all Americans the great truth first spoken by Abraham Lincoln: "The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities. But in all that people can individually do as well for themselves, Government ought not to interfere."

Our great President Dwight D. Eisenhower has counseled us further: "In all those things which deal with people, be liberal, be human. In all those things which deal with people's money, or their economy, or their form of government, be conservative."

While jealously guarding the free institutions and preserving the principles upon which our Republic was founded and has flourished, the purpose of the Republican Party is to establish and maintain a peaceful world and build at home a dynamic prosperity in which every citizen fairly shares.

We shall ever build anew, that our children and their children, without distinction because of race, creed or color, may know the blessings of our free land.

We believe that basic to governmental integrity are unimpeachable ethical standards and irreproachable personal conduct by all people in government. We shall continue our insistence on honesty as an indispensable requirement of public service. We shall continue to root out corruption whenever and wherever it appears.

We are proud of and shall continue our far-reaching and sound advances in matters of basic human needs?expansion of social security?broadened coverage in unemployment insurance ?improved housing?and better health protection for all our people. We are determined that our government remain warmly responsive to the urgent social and economic problems of our people.

To these beliefs we commit ourselves as we present this record and declare our goals for the future.

Nearly four years ago when the people of this Nation entrusted their Government to President Eisenhower and the Republican Party, we were locked in a costly and stalemated war. Now we have an honorable peace, which has stopped the bitter toll in casualties and resources, ended depressing wartime restraints, curbed the runaway inflation and unleashed the boundless energy of our people to forge forward on the road to progress.

In four years we have achieved the highest economic level with the most widely shared benefits that the world has ever seen. We of the Republican Party have fostered this prosperity and are dedicated to its expansion and to the preservation of the climate in which it has thrived.

We are proud of our part in bringing into a position of unique authority in the world one who symbolizes, as can no other man, the hopes of all peoples for peace, liberty and justice. One leader in the world today towers above all others and inspires the trust, admiration, confidence and good will of all the peoples of every nation?Dwight D. Eisenhower. Under his leadership, the Republican Administration has carried out foreign policies which have enabled our people to enjoy in peace the blessings of liberty. We shall continue to work unceasingly for a just and enduring peace in a world freed of tyranny.

Every honorable means at our command has been exercised to alleviate the grievances and causes of armed conflict among nations. The advance of Communism and its enslavement of people has been checked, and, at key points, thrown back. Austria, Iran and Guatemala have been liberated from Kremlin control. Forces of freedom are at work in the nations still enslaved by Communist imperialism.

We firmly believe in the right of peoples everywhere to determine their form of government, their leaders, their destiny, in peace. Where needed, in order to promote peace and freedom throughout the world, we shall within the prudent limits of our resources, assist friendly countries in their determined efforts to strengthen their economies.

We hold high hopes for useful service to mankind in the power of the atom. We shall generously assist the International Atomic Energy Agency, now evolving from President Eisenhower's "Atoms for Peace" proposal, in an effort to find ways to dedicate man's genius not to his death, but to his life.

We maintain that no treaty or international agreement can deprive any of our citizens of Constitutional rights. We shall see to it that no treaty or agreement with other countries attempts to deprive our citizens of the rights guaranteed them by the Federal Constitution.

President Eisenhower has given the world bold proposals for mutual arms reduction and protection against aggression through flying sentinels in an "open sky."

We support this and his further offer of United States participation in an international fund for economic development financed from the savings brought by true disarmament. We approve his determined resistance to disarmament without effective inspection.

We work and pray for the day when the domination of any people from any source will have ended, and when there will be liberation and true freedom for the hundreds of millions of individuals now held in subjugation. We shall continue to dedicate our best efforts to this lofty purpose.

We shall continue vigorously to support the United Nations.

We shall continue to oppose the seating of Communist China in the United Nations.

We shall maintain our powerful military strength as a deterrent to aggression and as a guardian of the peace. We shall maintain it ready, balanced and technologically advanced for these objectives only.

Good times in America have reached a breadth and depth never before known by any nation. Moreover, it is a prosperity of a nation at peace, not at war. We shall continue to encourage the good business and sound employee relationships which have made possible for the first time in our history a productive capacity of more than $400 billion a year. Nearly 67 million people have full-time jobs, with real wages and personal income at record highs.

The farmers of America are at last able to look to the future with a confidence based on expanding peacetime markets instead of on politically contrived formulas foredoomed to fail except in a wartime economy. The objective is to insure that agriculture shares fairly and fully in our record prosperity without needless Federal meddlings and domination.

Federal government ending Wyoming wolf protections

(AP) ? The federal government will end its protections for wolves in Wyoming, where the species was introduced two decades ago to revive it from near extinction in the United States.

The announcement Friday by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will entrust the state with managing wolf numbers and endorses a plan that allows for them to be shot on sight in most of the state, while keeping them permanently protected in designated areas like Yellowstone National Park. Wyoming will take over management of the wolves at the end of September.

The decision of the announcement quickly sparked promises of legal challenges from environmental groups that argue wolves still need protection to maintain their successful recovery. Dan Ashe, the agency's director, acknowledged the "emotional reaction to wolf hunting" but said it would not be "detrimental to long-term conservation of wolves."

"Quite the contrary, it will support long-term conservation of wolves as it has other predators like mountain lion and grizzly bear and black bear," Ashe said.

Wyoming has been chaffing under federal wolf protections for years, with ranchers and hunters complaining that wolves kill other wildlife and many cattle.

North America was once home to as many as 2 million gray wolves, but by the 1930s, fur traders, bounty hunters and government agents had poisoned, trapped and shot them to near extinction in the continental United States. An effort to revive their numbers emerged and centered on starting the recovery in Yellowstone.

Overcoming protests from Wyoming farmers and ranchers who feared wolves would prey on their livestock, wildlife managers transplanted 14 wolves from Canada into Yellowstone in the mid-1990s. The effort exceeded all expectations as wolf numbers quickly multiplied, and Friday's action means Wyoming can now take measures to control their population outside the Greater Yellowstone vicinity.

"The wolf population in Wyoming is recovered, and it is appropriate that the responsibility for wolf management be returned to the state," Gov. Matt Mead said Friday in support of the federal decision.

There are about 270 wolves in Wyoming outside Yellowstone. There are about another 1,100 or so in Montana and Idaho, where wolves were delisted several years ago, and still more in Washington and Oregon.

Wyoming's management plan, which was agreed to last year by Gov. Matt Mead and U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, calls for the state to maintain at least 10 breeding pairs of wolves and at least 100 individual animals. Additional wolves inside Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway ? which is located between Yellowstone and Grand Teton ? and the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming will maintain protection from being hunted.

The state will classify wolves in the remaining 90 percent of Wyoming as predators, subject to being killed anytime by anyone.

The Wyoming Game Commission has approved wolf hunts starting on Oct. 1, the day after the state's management plan goes into effect. The state is prepared to issue unlimited hunting licenses but will call a halt after hunters kill 52 wolves.

Wildlife advocates said Wyoming's management plan allows the state too much freedom to hunt wolves.

"From our perspective the Wyoming wolf management plan is just a disaster for the wolf. It drastically reduces the population and basically eliminates wolves from a large part of the state," said Noah Greenwald with the Center for Biological Diversity.

Jamie Rappaport Clark, president of Defenders of Wildlife, said in a statement that the organization would pursue legal action "to ensure that a healthy, sustainable wolf population."

Bryce Reece, executive vice president of the Wyoming Wool Growers Association, said ranchers for too long had their hands tied in trying to stop wolves attacking their livestock.

"The reality is my folks aren't in any big rush to get there to try to kill a wolf. They just want the ability to protect their livestock," Reece said. "We are hopeful, by putting some pressure on them, they'll move back into areas where it's less habited and there's less livestock."

Earlier this week, a young woman -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- sent us an email about her experience interviewing for a job as a server at 5th Avenue's?Juvenito. While meeting with head chef Juvenito Avila, she claims that he mentioned the existence of a blog that some former, disgruntled employees had created in an attempt to sour his reputation. On this blog, titled "Juvenito Disclosed,"?22 former restaurant employees accuse the 39 year-old?restaurant runner of public berating, grueling 17-hour work days, and sexual harrassment.?

You may have stumbled upon, passed by, or regularly dined at an establishment in Park Slope, Brooklyn known formerly as Get Fresh Table & Market, and currently Juventino.

If you?ve stopped in to dine you have likely enjoyed a meal that incorporates fresh, seasonal ingredients in a quaint and comfortable setting. We know how enchanting this place can be, because these elements attracted us to the restaurant too.?We are the servers who, for the past four years, have helped offer a dining experience worthy of the restaurant?s exceptional food and charming aesthetic.

Yet appearances deceive. Each of us, while working in this environment, has experienced an intolerable level of abuse from the owner who shares his name with the restaurant. The cycle begins with the interview, when Juventino tells each applicant that his methods are ?different? than she may be used to, but that the financial gain will justify the means. It?s not a coincidence that most of the new hires at this restaurant are young women with no experience in the industry, and who, more often than not, speak English as their second or third language. These factors make the initial appeal of monetary rewards even more persuasive, and the incentive to endure the abuse greater.

Public berating is commonplace, usually stemming from Juventino?s inconsistent and severe communication style, which is often exacerbated by drinking. Intelligent servers are made to feel incapable, and feedback is confusingly encouraged, discouraged, and ultimately dismissed. Employees are expected to become beholden to Juventino ? to the point where everything else, including family and relationship commitments, must be put aside.?This fosters an environment in which, at its least injurious, 17-hour workdays without breaks are expected, and at its most despicable,?young women are subjected to unwanted sexual advances?behind the closed and locked doors of Juventino?s office.?

The mental and physical toll on the staff is palpable. Former employees have experienced nightmares and anxiety for an entire year after leaving their posts. Others have lost unhealthy amounts of weight or gotten sick from the sheer exhaustion of making a constant effort to avoid Juventino?s moodswings.??Almost all of us have remarked that it was the most abusive workplace they have ever experienced.

?

We understand that it is bold to write a public letter of this nature, and it is not an action we have taken without serious thought and deliberation.?Many of us have confronted Juventino about his misuse of authority, giving him the opportunity for dialogue and most importantly, change. Yet, he has consistently refused to acknowledge or take responsibility for his actions, even choosing to spread falsehoods about former employees who left after feeling mistreated.

We acknowledge that mistreatment is not unheard of in the restaurant industry.? This issue, however, is particularly pernicious in a small business such as this, where power and control is not distributed beyond the owner. Without a system of checks and balances, the terms of abuse can be improperly justified as a managerial style of choice and continue for years without accountability or consequence.

We are writing you today in order to give you the informed choice of your patronage.

In a community concerned with workers? rights and conscious consumerism, we feel it is only fair to enlighten you to an environment that exists in your very neighborhood. We believe Juventino is doing a disservice not only to his servers of the past and present, but to his incredibly hardworking and honorable cooks, and ultimately to you, the unwitting guest whose patronage sustains his business and misbehavior.

"When he was talking about the letter," the interviewee explained, "he didn't seem to take it seriously, like it was everybody else's fault and that he didn't need to change a thing about himself."

Jezebel recently spoke with Avila?about the allegations, which he adamently denied.?"If I have done something, I'm guilty of being aggressive and strong minded," he explained, adding,?"But I have a mom, and I have sisters, and [sexual harassment] is something I would never condone or be a part of. I know it's common at restaurants, but I don't accept it." Jezebel also spoke with Juvenito's owner,?Rebecca Uberti, who?called the sexual harassment allegations "100% unfounded and untrue" and said they were "detailed lies from disgruntled employees who may or may not have been terminated for poor job performance." It's worth noting that Uberti has been in a relationship with Juvenito Avila since 1996. And though both Avila and Uberti claim that no formal complaints about these allegations of abuse were ever lodged, many of the former employees claim that they spoke up about the abuse in their exit interviews, which took place with Juvenito Avila himself.?

While we're still waiting to hear back from some of the 22 employees who are behind the blog (almost all of whom are female -- only one male signed the petition), Jezebel did speak with a few of them, who?regaled horrific stories of a power-hungry man who would lock himself in an office with young women and try to kiss them or ask for massages. Daily attempted gropings are described, as is verbal abuse, like one girl who claims that Avila called her a "dirty slut" after showing up for work with a cold sore on her mouth.

Of the six former employees that Jezebel spoke with, only one is considering taking legal action against Juvenito Avila. The rest claim that they want other servers suffering from the same abuse to know that they're not alone. "We want to start a dialog with other women in the industry so they know that they can come forward, too," one woman explained. "Just because lines get blurred doesn't mean it's ever okay to experience harassment in the workplace."?

The Giants got down to 53 players today and two veteran defensive players wound up on injured reserve on their way to that number.

Cornerback Terrell Thomas and defensive tackle Shaun Rogers have both been shelved for the season as players placed on injured reserve without first making the 53-man roster are not eligible to be designated as short-term injured reserve players under the rule adopted this week. There had been hopeful signs about both players in recent days, which made it seem like they could be considered for the new designation. That turned out not to be the case.

It?s a brutal blow for Thomas, who was coming off a torn ACL when he re-injured the same knee early in camp. Doctors determined there was not another tear and that Thomas could rehab the injury without surgery, but the Giants obviously don?t think he?s going to get to a place where he can help them this year. Thomas will almost certainly become a free agent after the season as the Giants have an out after the first year of the four-year deal he signed this offseason and it will be interesting to see what he has left after two full years off the field.

Rogers has a blood clot in his league that was originally thought to be a season-ending condition. There were reports to the contrary, but it turns out the first word was the right word. Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who has battled a back injury much of the summer, made the 53-man roster and could be a candidate for the new short term provision.

We?ve reported on several of the Giants cuts already on Friday, but here?s the full list: They waived/injured cornerback Bruce Johnson and cut wide receivers David Douglas, Dan DePalma and Isiah Stanback, defensive ends Craig Marshall and Matt Broha, defensive tackles Marcus Thomas and Dwayne Hendricks, linebacker Jake Muasau, tight end Larry Donnell, offensive linemen Chris White, Matt McCants, Selvish Capers and Stephen Goodin, defensive backs Laron Scott and Dante Hughes and quarterback Ryan Perrilloux.

Safety Tyler Sash will spend the first four weeks of the season serving a suspension.
