Sasol sees solid year earnings, production

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African petrochemicals group Sasol said its expectations for a strong year had been boosted by a good quarterly performance at its synthetic fuels unit.

"We remain confident that, based on the production guidance and our macroeconomic assumptions, we will deliver solid operational performance and earnings for the (2012/13) financial year," chief financial officer Christine Ramon said on Monday.

Currency and oil price volatility were likely to persist given the uncertain global economic outlook, she also said in a trading update.

Output of synthetic fuels from July-September - its first quarter - rose 12 percent to 1.8 million tonnes. Sasol, the world's top maker of motor fuels from coal, kept its full-year production forecast at 7.2-7.4 million tonnes.

The quarter was also boosted by a weaker rand, which helps exporters as it lifts profit when overseas earnings are brought home. The average Brent crude oil price, however, softened and chemical prices remained depressed, hitting Sasol's chemicals units, where demand remained soft, the company said.

Sasol has been diversifying into chemicals, gas and clean-energy projects to benefit from low gas prices. Ramon said the company had reviewed its capital projects, including a plan to build gas-to-liquid (GTL) plants in North America.

In the United States, Sasol will proceed with engineering studies for a 96,000 barrels-per-day GTL and chemicals facility, expected to cost $11-$14 billion and be completed by 2019.

It will also do further studies on an integrated ethane cracker complex there, estimated to cost up to $7 billion and seen as being completed by 2017.

Both estimates have gone up from previous estimates due to changes in design and higher costs.

A GTL project in Canada will be put on hold.

Sasol were down 1.6 percent to 368.84 rand by 1125 GMT.

"We are still long-term positive on the stock, but the delay to the Canadian GTL is disappointing," Vestact analyst Sasha Naryshkine said. "People want to see smooth earnings but also headway in project execution."

Sasol, which last year put on hold development of a coal-to-liquids plant in China, said it was still in talks about divesting its 50 percent stake in Iranian venture Arya Sasol Polymer Company. While there was uncertainty about fair value, headline earnings per share would not be hit, it said.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) -- Quality Systems is moving up the payment date of its regular quarterly dividend, a step that many companies are taking ahead of impending tax increases and government spending cuts at the start of 2013.

The White House and Republican congressional leaders are trying to strike a deal to avoid falling off the fiscal cliff, a reference to the combination of simultaneous tax hikes and spending cuts due to take effect at the start of 2013.

Quality Systems Inc. is the latest company to move up the payment of its quarterly dividend to protect investors from potentially having to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in January.

The Irvine, Calif., company said Tuesday that the payment date for its quarterly dividend of 17.5 cents per share is being moved to Dec. 28 from Jan. 4, 2013. The record date of Dec. 14 remains the same.

Many companies are reviewing their dividend policies now that it appears investors could soon pay higher taxes. Since 2003 investors have paid a maximum 15 percent on dividend income. But that historically low rate will expire in January unless Congress and President Barack Obama reach a compromise on taxes and government spending. As it stands, dividends will be taxed as ordinary income in 2013, the same as wages, so rates will go up depending on which income bracket a taxpayer is in. For the highest earners, the dividend rate would jump to 43.4 percent.

Union calls for teacher certification exam

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the nation's largest teachers unions is proposing a stringent exam teachers would have to pass before entering the profession, much like the bar exam for lawyers.

The American Federation of Teachers says in a new report that such an exam would raise the benchmark for teachers. It's calling on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to take the lead in creating the exam.

AFT President Randi Weingarten says too many teachers are thrown into the classroom before they're ready. She says that's unfair to students and teachers.

To pass the written exam, teachers would also need a minimum grade point average and at least one year of successful student teaching.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan is commending the proposal. He says the U.S. shouldn't tolerate having unprepared teachers.

David Oliver Relin Dead: 'Three Cups Of Tea' Co-Author Takes His Own Life

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Authorities say David Oliver Relin, the coauthor of the best selling novel "Three Cups of Tea," has died in Oregon at age 49.

Deputy Multnomah County Medical examiner Peter Bellant says Relin committed suicide on Nov. 14.

He says Relin died of blunt force head injury in the community of Corbett, near Portland, but he did not provide further details.

Relin was coauthor with Greg Mortenson of the acclaimed novel "Three Cups of Tea," which recount how Mortenson started building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The book came under scrutiny last year when "60 Minutes" and Jon Krakauer alleged that it contained numerous fabrications.

Earlier this year, a district court dismissed a lawsuit that alleged that the coauthors along with their publisher and a charity lied to boost sales and donations.

Creator of the Soviet Union's version of Winnie-the-Pooh, Fyodor Khitruk, dies in Moscow

MOSCOW - Fyodor Khitruk, the creator of the Soviet Union's animated version of A.A. Milne's classic Winnie-the-Pooh tales, has died in Moscow. He was 95.

The Russian Animated Film Association said in a statement on its website on Monday that Khitruk died Monday morning at his home in Moscow. The date of the funeral has yet to be set.

The three much-loved Soviet cartoons of Vinni-Pukh, as Winnie the Pooh is known in Russia, were made between 1969 and 1972 and continue to be aired frequently on television to this day.

Along with Yuri Norshtein, whose 1975 "Hedgehog in the Fog" remains a cult classic, Khitruk has been credited as a leading innovator in the history of Soviet animation.
