Sir Michael Parkinson: 'I've got prostate cancer'

Veteran broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson has today revealed he is battling prostate cancer.
The 78-year-old chat show host has started intensive radiotherapy treatment after being diagnosed during a routine check-up.
He has urged other men to get themselves checked as he launches a campaign to raise awareness of the disease.

He told the Sun: 'I have cancer ? and I must admit it is a bore. I am 78. Of course mortality is on the mind. But I?m not afraid.'

In an interview with the paper, during which he credited his wife Mary for her tremendous support and vowed to carry on working, he revealed he was first told he might have a problem during a routine check up.

The test measures the amount of Prostate Specific Antigen, a protein produced by the prostate gland and which can be detected in blood samples.
THE MOST COMMON CANCER IN UK
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK.
More than 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
Symptoms often only become apparent when the prostate has become large enough to affect the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis).
They include an increased need to urinate, straining while urinating and a feeling your bladder has not fully emptied.
However, these signs may not be a sign of? prostate cancer.
It is more likely they are caused by something else, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (also known as BPH or prostate enlargement).
Higher-than-normal amounts can indicate the presence of cancer.
The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis found only in men. About the size of a walnut, it is located between the penis and the bladder. It surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis.
Sir Michael was diagnosed with cancer in May and began treatment in at Cromwell Hospital in South Kensington, London, on Monday.
In a typically straight talking manner, he said the treatment was painless but 'boring', and Lasted around six minutes each time.
He said he was not 'playing down' the situation, adding: 'The point I want to make is that if prostate cancer is identifiable early, it is treatable and curable.'
He urged men to test themselves while urinating. He said if, while at a urinal, a man could not hit the wall from 2ft, they should get themselves checked by a doctor.
Prostate cancer claims the lives of more than 10,000 men in the UK every year yet, unlike breast cancer, there is no national screening programme for the disease.
Sir Michael is best known for his chat show Parkinson, which ran from 1971 to 1982 and 1998 to 2007.
In a career spanning 50 years, he has spoken to Marlon Brando, Fred Astaire, Orsen Welles, Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna and George Michael.
He is perhaps best known for ANawkward 2003 interview with actor Meg Ryan.
While he has called this his 'most difficult television moment', he said the most remarkable person he ever interviewed was the boxer Muhammad Ali.

Located at the base of the Kologha mountain range on the Eastern Cape in Stutterheim, Eagles Ridge is adjacent to an indigenous forest and sits atop a sprawling bright green lawn and garden that gently cascades to a wetland bird sanctuary.? This place has a barefoot, no-frills mentality; don?t forget to meet their pet tarantula and the 20-year old Golden Orb spider that sits in a sheltered web above a doorway.
The main facility is an eccentric restaurant-art gallery that serves fresh Euro-African fusion cuisine ? many of the vegetables are from the on-site garden or are organic and locally sourced.? Embedded mirrors are scattered on the walls and floors in different shapes and sizes throughout.? In the midst of vibrant artwork, found art displays and a spiral staircase to a spacious rooftop are pastel-colored mosaic tiles that swirl all around your feet and encircle a tall tree that sprouts out of the floor.? Art on display throughout the gallery is designed mostly by locals and many of the ceramic sculptures are created at Free Wings Art Studio, the Eagles Ridge workshop.
Sounds of the 1960?s gently play on the loudspeakers in the open, sunny space.? While admiring the multiplicity of mirrors and colors I had the pleasure of hearing The Rolling Stones song ?She?s A Rainbow?, a perfectly timed surprise.

Organized in a ?quaint village style? setting, pathways that lead to the restaurant-art gallery are carved by trees with dream-catchers on their trunks and little ceramic sculptures, many of which are created at Free Wings.? A series of thatched rondavels ? quintessential, African-style cottages ? are decorated with plaids, prints, and every type of textile imaginable.? Bathrooms are covered in colorful mosaic tiles and intricate designs, created by artist Coenie Strydom, a South Africa native who exhibits his work and teaches sculpture classes at Free Wings.? Ceramic classes, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, bouldering and birding are also available for guests.
The Xhosas at Eagles Ridge
Eagles Ridge regularly hosts ceremonies, story-telling and musical performances for the Xhosa people, a South African tribe that speaks the tonal Xhosa language, whose words are communicated with clicks of the tongue.? The tribe visits Eagles Ridge to share their ancient traditions, cook Xhosa meals and perform drumming, dancing and singing rituals for guests.? As a way to connect to local culture, Eagles Ridge never knows what to expect from the Xhosas: the entire event is spontaneous and never staged.

Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has sold his hill-top mansion overlooking Lake Austin just six weeks after he bought it for $4.34 million.
The seven-time Tour de France winner, who was last year exposed as a drugs cheat, has sold the home to racing driver Bret Curtis for an undisclosed sum. It isn?t known if he sold so soon to make a quick profit or if there is another explanation.
Continuing the rapid-fire real estate moves, Armstrong purchased a new Austin home only five days after closing the deal in Lake Austin.

Armstrong bought the 7,646-square-foot, single-family home from Ben Barnes, the former lieutenant governor of Texas and speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, reports Zillow.
The property is described as a ?1924 Mediterranean-style manse in the Old West neighborhood? and sits on nearly half an acre.

Armstrong, who was last year banned from sports for life and stripped of his titles by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, has been hopping around Texas for some time.
A local businessman reportedly took out a $3.1million loan to buy Armstrong's home in Central Austin, which earlier this year served as the setting for his televised confessional with Oprah Winfrey.

Despite spending years renovating the property, it had been speculated that Armstrong sold the home to raise the funds to deal with a number of lawsuits he faces from former sponsors angry about his doping.
They include one for $12million from SCA Promotions, and a possible $100million lawsuit from the Justice Department as they may seek three times the amount that the Postal Service paid to sponsor him throughout his career.
Armstrong bought the 7,850-square-foot mansion in 2004, and spent years renovating it with the team of architects that he had previously worked with on his homes in Spain, New York, the Bahamas and a second property in Texas.
He was so proud of the finished product that he gave an interview and tour to Architectural Digest where he talked about his love of art and his desire to turn the home into a true family house.
At the time of the 2008 interview, he had three children from his first marriage and told how he envisioned the house as a home to them where they - along with their mother, his ex-wife Kristen - would spend quality time together.
'When their mom and I split, the kids and I moved around a bunch. But that?s over. This time I said, "You will graduate from high school in this house. I promise. Dad?s not moving again,"' he told the magazine.

The disgraced cyclist also bought a home in Aspen, Colorado, to enable him to train at altitude for an estimated $9million in 2008.
He is also said to own homes in New York and Hawaii, and lived in Girona, in Spain for several years in his Tour de France days.
In 2004 he lived at his Spanish home for a spell with his then-girlfriend, singer Sheryl Crow.
As well as his impressive array of homes, Armstrong also owns the Juan Pelota Cafe in Austin, Texas, and a cycle shop called Mellow Johnny's from the same building.

Anyone read this book? I finished it a few days ago and would recommend it as a good read for any Pats/Brady fan or just a fan of quarterbacks in general. He goes through most of the great quarterbacks of all time and their careers and compares them to Brady. The other chapters are about Brady's college years and years with the Pats up until 2012.
One of my only complaints is that I was expecting a more stat oriented book. But as an overview of most of the great quarterbacks and the Brady years, it's an interesting read. He even has a chapter on Rodgers/Brees/Big Ben and Eli and the rest of the current NFL QBs. He basically comes to the conclusion that while Brees and Big Ben are future HOFers, they aren't in the top 10 of all-time talk, that Rodgers is only getting better and already has historical numbers, and the Eli "elite" talk is just a result of his own self-confidence, having Manning as a last name and being a media darling.
