They recognise that there is a limit to how much cost can be taken out of the finance function. Their focus has shifted instead to how they can get more value from finance.

• Current developments in business intelligence (BI) present an opportunity for finance functions to provide better management information and to realise their potential to better support the business.

• The term ?business intelligence? is often used to describe the technical architecture or ?stack? of systems that extract, assemble, store and access data to provide reports and analysis. It can also be used to describe the reporting and analysis applications layer or performance management tools at the top of this ?stack??.. But BI is not just about hardware or software. Success depends on senior management recognizing that an organisation?s data is an important strategic asset that can yield valuable management information. Their leadership is essential when implementing changes and developing the culture necessary to unlock the potential in a BI solution so the better information generated is actually used to improve decision making.

• Most organisations are either not alert to the potential in BI or are still wary of investing in information systems. Meanwhile, major companies in certain sectors already use BI to achieve competitive advantage. Software vendors have developed solutions to address systems integration or data quality which were often areas of difficulty.

• Moreover, developments in cloud computing and in in-memory processing mean this technology is becoming more cost-effective for a wider range of sectors and for smaller companies too.

• BI may threaten some traditional accounting roles in the monthly reporting cycle, but it presents new opportunities to stimulate stalled finance transformation projects. It could release management accountants? capacity to help improve decision making from strategy formulation to risk and performance management.

• Business leaders and management accountants must be alert to the potential of developments in the role of the finance function (finance transformation) and BI. The combination of these developments provides an opportunity to improve accounting operations and acquire a greater competence in informed decision making. These could enable an organization to ensure its sustainability by becoming more adaptable through being better informed and able to respond more rapidly than its competitors to market developments.

• As globalisation gives competitors access to similar resources and competition causes their business processes to converge on similar standards, decision making becomes the remaining key to superior performance. Any company that fails to transform its finance and accounts function to support decision making could be putting its competitive position at risk.

• A survey commissioned by Business Objects from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) found that nine out of ten corporate executives admit to making important decisions on the basis of inadequate information. Less than one in ten executives in the survey receive information when they need it.

The BC Coroners Service and Office of the Fire Commissioner are urging owners of mobile homes and recreational vehicles and operators of mobile home and RV parks to take special care to prevent fires in the wake of a calamitous New Year?s weekend for fire deaths in British Columbia.

From December 29, 2011 to January 2, 2012, seven lost their lives in five separate fires. Three of those fires and five of the deaths occurred in mobile homes or travel trailers being used as living accommodation. The BC Coroners Service and the Office of the Fire Commissioner are continuing to investigate these fires.

Studies show that fires in mobile homes and recreational vehicles, especially older units, tend to be more devastating than those in other forms of residence.

Mobile home and RV fires claim the lives of 345 Americans each year and injure 765 more according to a fact sheet prepared by United States Fire Administration (USFA) in June 2006.

Heating and electrical system malfunctions are the leading causes of fire in mobile homes and RVs. Together, they account for one-third of the fires.

Tires and brakes are the culprit in almost 20 percent of RV fires. Some of the worst fires are those caused when one tire of a dual or tandem pair goes flat and then scuffs and ignites, long before the driver feels any change in handling.

At each rest stop, give your tires at least an eyeball check. Remember a pressure gauge reading on hot tires is NOT accurate. Tap duals with a club and listen for a difference in sound; you can often tell if a tire is going soft.

Safety Precautions

Reduce the risk of a fire in your RV/mobile home by following these fire safety guidelines:

• Install and maintain at least one smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm in your RV near the sleeping area
• Install and maintain a propane (LP gas) leak alarm at floor level in your RV, no more than six inches above the floor
• Test your smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, and propane alarm once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year
• You should have three fire extinguishers for your coach?one in the galley, one in the bedroom, and one outside of the coach in an unlocked compartment or in your tow vehicle
• Make sure family members know how to use the extinguishers and understand which extinguishers are effective on various fires
• Ensure electrical wiring and appliances are in good working order
• Never run extension cords under rugs/carpets
• Have your fuel-burning appliances checked annually to ensure they are properly vented, free of any obstructions and dust, and are in good working condition
• The stove should NEVER be used to heat the interior of the RV
• Never leave cooking unattended
• When using the RV stove top or oven, turn on the exhaust fan and open a nearby window to allow fresh air in and carbon monoxide gases out
• Ensure that your 110 power cord for connecting your RV to the campground pedestal is in good condition and of suitable gauge wire to handle the electrical load placed upon it
• Driving with propane on can add to the danger if you are involved in an accident or have a fire; shut off the propane at the tank and turn off all propane-powered appliances while driving
• Confirm that the local emergency number for police, fire, and ambulance is 911 and is available in your current location
• Develop and practice an escape/evacuation plan

How Does Google AdSense Work? The concept is simple: The publisher or webmaster inserts a java script into a website. Each time the page is accessed, the java script pulls advertisements from Google's AdSense program. The ads are targeted and related to the content contained on the web page serving the ad. If a web surfer clicks on an advertisement served from Google, the webmaster serving the ad earns a portion of the money that the advertiser is paying Google for the click.

Google handles all the tracking and payments, ultimately providing an easy way for webmasters to display content-sensitive, targeted ads, without the headache of having to solicit advertisers, collect funds, monitor clicks or track statistics, any of which could easily become a full-time job.

While Google AdSense, like many pay-per-click programs, is plagued by claims of click-fraud, it is clearly an effective revenue source for many reputable web businesses. The Evolution of AdSense While Google's initial system was fairly rudimentary, only providing publishers the option of displaying a handful of advertising formats, the technology behind even the first ads was anything but simplistic. The technology used to employ Google AdSense goes far beyond simple keyword or category matching. A complex algorithm is used to determine the content contained on the web page serving the ad. Once the content is assessed, and appropriate ads that contain related content are served.

Early on, Google implemented a system that allows publishers to filter advertisements from competitors or sites which they deemed inappropriate. Google also allows vendors to specify an alternative advertisement, in the unlikely event that Google is unable to provide related content ads.

Alysia Flynn, Former Cop, Had Sex With Florida Teen Nearly 100 Times: Report

A mother and former cop had sex with at least one underage Florida boy dozens of times, threw wild parties for high school students and thought she was pregnant with a teen's child, a shocking sheriff's office report released on Monday alleges.

Alysia Flynn, 32, faces nearly 100 charges of having sex with the teen over the course of a year, according to a report obtained by WFTV.

The sheriff's office report states that Flynn, a friend of the 15-year-old boy's family, also thought she was pregnant at some point during their fling. Coaches and school staff at Viera High School, as well as the boy's parents, allegedly knew about the relationship for up to a year before it was reported to police.

Flynn was arrested on Thursday.

"It appears we?ve got a woman in her 30s actively looking for high school boys," Brevard County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Tod Goodyear told Florida Today. "From what we've uncovered so far from interviews, we're pretty confident there are other victims."

Cops suspect that Flynn was also hosting booze-fueled benders for teens at her home for teens from Viera High School and its football team.

WFTV reported that the teen's parents handed his cell phone over to investigators, and that Flynn was found to have naked pictures of the boy on her phone.

She's been charged with 53 counts of unlawful sexual activity with minors, 42 counts of lewd and lascivious battery, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She may face more charges related to the pictures on her cell phone, cops said.

Pleasant Hill police union says violent crime on the rise; chief says the numbers consistent with previous years

PLEASANT HILL -- Last month, a fatal drive-by shooting and a botched armed robbery that left a man critically wounded rocked Pleasant Hill, where murder is uncommon and gunfire rarely disturbs the suburban quiet.

While the police union points to statistics for January and February as evidence of an alarming rise in violent crime, the chief says the numbers are fairly consistent with previous years.

Robberies spiked in the first two months of this year, up from one incident in 2011 to 10 in 2012. Residential and commercial burglaries also were up in January from the same month in 2011, from 13 to 23, but remained relatively flat for February, records show. And last month, a group of residents from Marlee Road told the council about a rash of car thefts and break-ins in their neighborhood. By comparison, Martinez -- a city of similar size -- had no murders and 15 robberies through the end of February.

"We're starting out this year with violent crimes, officers being injured and assaulted, and we're asking for help plain and simple," said union president Officer Todt Clark, who acknowledged the numbers are a snapshot and may not be indicative of a trend this year.

"We hope the administration of this agency and city leaders would join us and ask residents and people who work here and pass through town, if you see something suspicious, if it doesn't seem right, give us a call."

Chief Pete Dunbar said he appreciates the union's

effort to raise public awareness about crime prevention and the need to report sketchy activity. But he points out that there were eight robberies during the first two months of 2010 and 11 during the same period in 2009. Though deeply troubling, neither the murder nor the shooting behind Strandwood Elementary School was random, he added.

"My message is also, this is still a very safe city despite these crimes because it's consistent with the numbers in previous years, except for last year when it was down," Dunbar said.

Clark said the union isn't lobbying for more police officers -- in fact, the department is hiring two, bringing the roster up to 44. He also said officers aren't casting blame on anyone, but simply are asking city leaders to acknowledge the crime burst and work with them to inform the community.

Still, there's the timing of the union's public education push. Dunbar was out of town Wednesday when the union blasted a news release with the crime statistics to Bay Area media outlets. Furthermore, Pleasant Hill and the 54-member Police Officers' Association just resumed contract negotiations in February. Last fall, after months of talks and a rancorous meeting at City Hall, the council imposed a contract on police officers and dispatchers that cut their retirement and medical benefits.

Clark said the contract talks did not play a role in the union's decision to go public now.

"We're currently in the middle of healthy negotiations with the city right now; that's a totally separate issue," he said.

Mayor John Hanecak said he doesn't have a problem with the union sending out a news release, but he suggested that the city's monthly newsletter may be a better way to communicate with residents.

He urges homeowners, like the folks from Marlee Road, to work with police to organize neighborhood watch groups. Hanecak also encourages people to report suspicious people or vehicles to police.

"I just want to avoid these tragedies for the families and anyone else involved in the future," he said.

Four ServiceMaster brands have joined forces with a new online fundraising program called Boost A Hero in an effort to help military veterans purchase franchise businesses. Boost A Hero, available at www.sprigster.com, provides a platform where vets utilize "crowdfunding" to raise the capital they need to purchase franchises like ServiceMaster Clean, Merry Maids, Furniture Medic and AmeriSpec -- which are all ServiceMaster brands.

The four ServiceMaster brands are charter members of the Boost A Hero program, which was recently initiated by Sprigster in partnership with the International Franchise Association (IFA).

"The unemployment rate for military veterans is 50 percent higher than the national average, despite the fact that vets make outstanding team members and business owners," said Beth Solomon, IFA Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Industry Relations. "One of the biggest challenges vets face in starting their own business is funding their initial investment, because they often lack sufficient working capital.

The June 23-24 Orion Music + More festival is shaping up to be a headbanger's ball for all kinds of music lovers.

Suicidal Tendencies, shown in this vintage shot, have just been added as headliners of the Damage Inc. stage.

Although Metallica's Lars Ulrich told Atlantic City Weekly in a recent exclusive interview that the band's slated summer music festival in Atlantic City will be planned by the "seam of their pants," looks like the metal band is starting a little earlier than expected to plan ahead.

On Thursday, March 8, Metallica's official Web site, announced more of the acts that will performing at the June 23-June 24 music festival at Bader Field in Atlantic City.

Along with a new Orion Festival news ticker added to the band's site, Metallica, which says they're "so excited about our upcoming festival, and so many new cool things will be added in the coming weeks, that we wanted to always have the latest news right here on top of Metallica.com," has added a Damage Inc. stage that will feature "lots of cool, heavy, thrash and punk bands" such as:

Red Fang
Kyng
Landmine Marathon

Santorum: Obama, Romney share distrust of America

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? Hoping to tap into deep distrust of Washington, Republican Rick Santorum suggested Friday that President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney share a top priority: to take away Americans' money and freedom so they can tell them how to live.

A day before Kansas Republicans weigh in on the party's presidential contest, Santorum looked to shore up support in this Midwestern state that seemed ready to give the former Pennsylvania senator yet another win and further challenge Romney's front-runner status. With sharp rhetoric, Santorum likened Romney to Obama and cast both as unacceptable for conservatives.

"We already have one president who doesn't tell the truth to the American people. We don't need another," Santorum said to cheers. "Gov. Romney reinvents himself for whatever the political occasion calls for."

Santorum has hammered Romney for a health care overhaul he signed into law as Massachusetts governor. Santorum's advisers see the issue as Romney's biggest weakness among conservatives. They make up the bulk of the Republican Party's nominating base but have so far split their votes between Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

"The worst offender is Gov. Romney. He put the template for Obamacare in place in Massachusetts," Santorum said.

Massachusetts requires citizens to buy health insurance. That mandate is central to Democrats' national plan, and Santorum called it unconstitutional.

Campaigning in Alabama, Romney fired back, characterizing Santorum as coming from the Washington establishment he's worked to distance himself from and reminding the former Pennsylvania senator ? and voters ? about a delegate count that puts Romney much closer to the nomination.

"Washington insider Rick Santorum is lashing out at Mitt Romney because he can't accept the fact that it's nearly impossible for him to win the number of delegates needed to secure the Republican nomination," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said.

Romney currently has 422 delegates committed to his nomination, while Santorum has 181 out of the 1,144 needed. Gingrich trails with 107 and Paul has 46, according to Associated Press calculations.

Santorum's small-government message resonated with Allan Holthaus, a 63-year-old Topeka contractor and farmer, who said he views Santorum as the most honest GOP candidate and the one most likely to try to deliver on his campaign promises.

Greeting Santorum after the rally, he said: "You help us get the government off our backs, and we'll help you fix it, that's for sure."

Santorum was also hoping to muscle Gingrich out of the race in the coming weeks, if not after Tuesday's contests in Alabama and Mississippi. Gingrich's advisors had said the former House speaker must win both states to stay in the race. Santorum's advisers anticipate Gingrich's conservative supporters would turn to Santorum and perhaps derail Romney's better-organized, better-funded political organization.

"We feel very confident that we can win Kansas on Saturday and come into Alabama and Mississippi and this race should come down to two people," Santorum told reporters.

And as the race turned South, the Santorum campaign on Friday hammered Gingrich on immigration, an issue likely to play prominently among Southern conservatives. Santorum turned to a key supporter and immigration hawk, former Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., to criticize Gingrich for supporting legislation that would, among other things, allow some children of illegal immigrants to become citizens.

"This is not just an immigration issue but a national security issue ? and Newt Gingrich fails our nation on both counts," Tancredo said, charging that Gingrich would "adopt the policies of the left."

Gingrich told The Associated Press at a campaign stop in Mississippi that win or lose on Tuesday, he's staying in the race through to the Republican National Convention scheduled for August in Tampa, Fla.

"We'll clearly do well enough to move on, and I think there's a fair chance we'll win. But I just want to set this to rest once and for all: We're going to Tampa."

Even before he arrived in Kansas, a state his rivals largely overlooked, Santorum signaled strength here.

"Since Romney and Gingrich have decided not to campaign in Kansas, we feel pretty confident that we're going to do well," Santorum told reporters before leaving Alabama.

Despite his anti-Washington message, Santorum faced grumbling from tea party activists for skipping their big rally in the state's largest city. They spent $25,000 to rent the Century II arena in downtown Wichita and expected 1,000 to 3,000 people to attend.

"It seems like it is counterproductive to show up for an event that is going to have 300 people in an airplane hangar instead (of) 3,000 people in a nice setting where you can actually contact and really maybe sway somebody," said Craig Gabel, the president of Kansas For Liberty, which organized the Wichita event.

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas was the only presidential candidate participating in the tea party event.

Santorum appeared not to know the timing of the tea party event and said he had to get to a speech Friday evening in Houston, a commitment he said was made months ago.
