Obama may lose gay voters to Gary Johnson in 2012 (Daily Caller)

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson announced Wednesday that he will run for president as a Libertarian Party candidate in 2012. He will almost certainly be the only presidential candidate on the ballot in all 50 states supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Johnson?s support for same-sex marriage, and President Barack Obama?s opposition to it, could put the support and votes of gay Americans in play during the election.

Lt. Dan Choi, who was discharged from the military under the ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? policy, told The Daily Caller, ?I am not in the habit of endorsing candidates and I no longer belong to any party, but I hold Governor Johnson in highest regards and think he would be an amazing president.?

Choi, who has declared in the past that he won?t vote for Obama again, ?called Johnson ?a patriot, a hero, a fighter and a friend. I salute him proudly and wish him the very best in his campaign.?

GOProud executive director Jimmy LaSalvia similarly indicated that gay voters may consider voting for Johnson.

?Gov. Johnson may very well attract gay voters because of his position on same-sex civil marriage, but I think that everyone on the ballot in November is going to give Obama a run for his money,? said LaSalvia.

Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger, currently running as the first openly gay man seeking a major party?s nomination, said that he is sticking with the GOP, but does find Johnson appealing as a candidate.

?I am a huge Gary Johnson fan and consider him a friend, but I am staying in the Republican Party and will fight for change from within,? said Karger.

Johnson is himself aware of that his position on same-sex marriage may pull votes away from the major party candidates, particularly from President Obama.

?I?m the only one advocating for marriage equality,? Johnson told The Daily Caller. ?If I were gay, that would really be an important issue for me.?

Johnson added, ?What I?m being asked right now is, ?Aren?t you going to ensure Obama?s re-election???

?I may well take more votes from Obama because of gay rights,? he conceded, but also ?because of the war, because of the war on drugs, you can really go down the list.?

The Human Rights Campaign, a large gay rights organization based in Washington, D.C., has already?endorsed Obama?s re-election bid. The group?s offices are closed for the holidays, so it was unable to comment on whether the endorsement will be reconsidered.

Choi said HRC members??should reconsider their purpose vis a vis the gay movement. If we are to play second fiddle to any one political party, our rights will always be relegated to the back of the DNC bus,? he said.

?It?s one thing to talk about the issues, and it?s another thing to look at the resume and decide: Is he going to hang with what he says?? Johnson mused. ?And everything about my resume says I?m going to hang with what I?m saying.?

AT&T completes acquisition of Qualcomm's FLO TV spectrum

It's only been five days since it's gotten the official go ahead, but AT&T's wasted no time in completing its acquisition of a swath of 700MHz spectrum from Qualcomm. Those airwaves, which formerly powered FLO TV, were purchased for a cool $1.9 billion and will now be repurposed to bolster Ma Bell's LTE network. It might not have been everything the carrier had hoped for, but additional spectrum is better than none, right? Possibly the shortest press release you'll ever see awaits after the break.

Clashes between sect, police kill 61 in Nigeria (AP)

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? Fighting between a radical Muslim sect and paramilitary forces in Nigeria has killed at least 61 people over several days of violence in the nation's northeast that has left churches bombed and people hiding in fear, authorities said.

In hard-hit Yobe state, where at least 50 people died, the government on Saturday ordered a dusk-till-dawn curfew following attacks by the sect known as Boko Haram. In Maiduguri, the capital of neighboring Borno state, bombs reduced at least three churches to rubble and raised fears of further attacks by a group that claimed Christmas Eve bombings last year that killed dozens.

The fighting began Thursday in the two states, with gunfire and explosions heard into the night and the following day in an arid region that borders Cameroon, Chad and Niger. Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, and the town of Potiskum bore the brunt of the violence.

In Damaturu, residents fled their homes near the city's central mosque ahead of a combined attack by soldiers and the federal police's feared Mobile Police, known as "kill-and-go" for their propensity for violence. The paramilitary forces raided the area in armored personnel carriers and tanks, with heavy gunfire marking their arrival.

"We were able to kill 12 of the Boko Haram armed sect and bombers," local police commissioner Lawan Tanko said. The police commissioner said officers also recovered Kalashnikov rifles, ammunition and explosives.

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, a mortuary official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter told The Associated Press at least 11 bodies had been brought in from the violence. Authorities blamed Boko Haram for firebombing at least three churches around the capital, attacks that killed one pastor and his young child.

This is just the latest in a series of bombings over the last year by Boko Haram. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, wants to implement strict Shariah law across a nation of more than 160 million people that is home to both Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Nov. 4 attack on Damaturu, Yobe state's capital, that killed more than 100 people. The group also claimed the Aug. 24 suicide car bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Nigeria's capital that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties. The sect is responsible for at least 465 killings in Nigeria this year alone, according to an AP count.

Boko Haram has splintered into three factions, with one wing increasingly willing to kill as it maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia, diplomats and security sources say. That, as well as its increasingly violent attacks, have some worried the group will carry out further attacks around Christmas and New Year's.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos claimed by Boko Haram killed at least 32 people and wounded at least 74 others.

With those attacks in mind, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria's capital of Abuja issued a warning Friday to citizens to be "particularly vigilant" around churches, large crowds and areas where foreigners congregate.

Analysts say the government's response remains strained as President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the country's south, remains worried about alienating the country's predominantly Muslim north with heavy-handed tactics. In 2009, a military and police crackdown following rioting by Boko Haram members in and around Maiduguri left 700 people dead.

Yet since Thursday, authorities have been using paramilitary police and soldiers more freely. Tanko, the Yobe state police commissioner, said joint patrols by the military and police would continue.

"When you are fighting people you don't know, you cannot say that's the end of the exercise," Tanko said. "We are trying to ensure that will be the end, but we are monitoring what is going on. But we know we cannot specifically say that will be the end."

Western Digital releases Android app to control set-top boxes remotely

This week, you'll be able to control your Western Digital set-top box with a free Android app. And you'll love it. Only days after releasing an equivalent app for iOS, Western Digital has just released WD TV Remote, a free Android app that connects to your Western Digital set-top box over a WiFi connection and allows you to control it from any Android-based device. The app includes one-touch access to every online service available, keyboard entry using Android's on-screen keyboard, a gesture pad for quick navigation and the ability to connect multiple Android devices at once. WD TV Remote requires Android 2.1 or later to install, as well as a WiFi network and third-generation WD TV Live Hub or TV Live system to run. In other news, development on an Android app to paint your house via gesture controls is proceeding quite nicely.

No charges for Milbury in confrontation with boy

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya, File)

(AP) ? Former Boston Bruins coach and player Mike Milbury will not face charges after a Massachusetts clerk magistrate ruled Friday that there's not enough evidence to criminally charge him after his confrontation with a 12-year-old youth hockey player.

The decision came after a closed-door hearing involving witnesses and police in Brookline District Court.

After the hearing, Milbury said he was pleased with the ruling.

"Well, that's good that it's over a couple days before Christmas," he said. "It was an unfortunate misunderstanding."

Police sought to have Milbury charged with assault and battery, making threats and disorderly conduct after the Dec. 9 incident at a public hockey rink in Brookline. They said Milbury grabbed, shook and threatened a boy who was fighting and jawing with his 12-year-old son.

The 59-year-old Milbury, who has said he grabbed the player's uniform to stop the fight but never assaulted or threatened the boy, recounted his version of the incident in an official statement following the ruling:

"My family and I are gratified that the clerk magistrate found no reason to further investigate the incident at Larz Anderson Park two weeks ago when I separated two 12 year old boys in a Pee Wee hockey game, one of whom was my son. I was a coach and supervisor on the ice that day when the scuffle broke out after the game had concluded and the referee had left. I know I acted responsibly to break up an altercation between two young boys in order to prevent potential injury to both. My actions were in no way inappropriate and I would take the same actions today if confronted with a similar situation in the future."

Milbury, an NHL analyst with NBC Sports, was taken off the air while he dealt with the incident. His attorney, Mark Berthiaume, said Friday that Milbury will resume work after the holidays.

John Burke, attorney for the family of the boy Milbury grabbed, said they were "obviously very disappointed with the magistrate's decision."

He said the family believes the boy was assaulted and the decision sends a message that violence by an adult against a child will be tolerated.

Milbury, a one-time defenseman, played parts of 12 seasons with the Bruins and later served as coach, leading the team to the Stanley Cup finals in 1990. He also was coach and general manager of the New York Islanders.

Utah Airmen among the last troops to return from Iraq

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The last of Utah's troops in Iraq are now back at home, making it just in time for Christmas. ABC 4 was there as the final seven of Utah?s Airmen arrived home Wednesday morning.

It's not everyday you get a welcome home like this, but for most of the families of the seven Utah Airmen, out of Hill Air Force Base, who flew back from Iraq Wednesday morning this is the last time.

"It's been tough," said Randall Williams, husband of Airman Margaret Williams.

"It's good to have him home, and know that I won't have to shovel snow," said Amy Bortz, wife of Airman Carl Bortz.

For some being back is simply overwhelming.

"I didn't wear my uniform because I'm a little nervous with the recognition, wherever you go people are stopping me, thanking me for my service," said Master Sgt. Margaret Williams, 75th Force Support Squadron.

They're part of 300, Air Force service members who arrived home Wednesday; they're literally the last military to leave Iraq.

"It was something to remember actually because a lot of people have gone over and lost their lives in Iraq, but to be one of the last few, was a good memory," said Master Sgt. Carl Bortz, 75th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

"It still really hasn't set in to know that I was one of the last five people to step on the aircraft and my squad were the last ones to clear the airfield and put everybody else on the plane. Let's go home. Let's go home," said Master Sgt. Daniel Bosche, 75th Security Forces Squadron.

This time they're not only home, but most are home for good.

Is Strauss-Kahn staging a political comeback ? on his wife's coattails?

Former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn, whose political life seemed over after sexual assault accusations, is back with a speech criticizing the EU. Does this, and his wife's selection as 'Woman of the Year,' signal his comeback?

Seven months ago, accused of sexually assaulting?a hotel maid, Dominique Strauss-Kahn was a man for whom time appeared to have run out.

The prominent managing director of the International Monetary Fund, the man who was poised to be the Socialist Party's presidential candidate challenging French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was finished, termin?, in the eyes of many. But yesterday, Mr. Strauss-Kahn made his first foray back into public life, giving a well-publicized speech to a Chinese-based Internet firm, blasting Europe for the eurozone crisis. And on the same day, Strauss-Kahn?s wife, Anne Sinclair, was named ?Woman of the Year? in a public opinion poll for her ?loyalty and courage? in standing by her man.

In his speech to the Chinese Internet company NetEase in Beijing, Strauss-Kahn let it be known he was not impressed with the restructuring of the European Union?s single-currency zone, hammered together by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Strauss-Kahn?s apparent rival, French President Sarkozy.

?None of the main problems has been addressed,? he said. ?There?s no central budget in Europe, no institutional centres, no lender of last resort, no expansion of the monetary policy.?

The French paper Le Monde carried more from Strauss-Kahn?s speech, which is translated here:

"With the recent storm, the raft seems not to?be?strong enough,? he said, speaking of the eurozone.??The fact that the euro is still in the middle of the river and that the union budget is not completed makes it very, very vulnerable, and the raft seems about to sink. (...)?I am not convinced that [French President] Sarkozy and [German Chancellor] Madame?Merkel will understand each other and this is probably one of the reasons why the European system has problems ahead,? he said.

Is it because the French public is, like Strauss-Kahn, pessimistic about the Eurozone bailout plan, or is it because they are simply sick of Sarkozy? Whatever the reasons, the French seem more than willing to overlook or move past Strauss-Kahn?s fall from grace?and see him return to the public stage.

Strauss-Kahn was?accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in New York City last May. Before that, he was the main challenger to Sarkozy in the upcoming 2012 presidential elections. Instead, he was escorted off his plane back to France in handcuff and put through a ?perp walk? by New York City police. He resigned his position as head of the IMF and spent the next few months preparing his defense.
