Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky announced Thursday that he will not run to be mayor of L.A., saying it is time for "a new generation of leaders to emerge and guide this region into the future."
Yaroslavsky, 63, described the decision on whether to run in the March 2013 race to succeed Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa as "one of the most difficult" in his political life, concluding that "four decades is long enough for any citizen to hold elective office." He first won a seat on the Los Angeles City Council in 1975 and has been serving on the Board of Supervisors for nearly two decades.
"I'm a lifelong resident of Los Angeles, a city facing serious challenges and opportunities. I have no doubt that, with my expertise and experience, I could help transform L.A.'s fortunes. In the end, however, it is this very length of service that has tipped the scales for me," he said in a statement on his website.
"So I've made the decision to complete my current term on the board and then move on to the other things I've longed to do outside the political arena while I have plenty of productive years ahead of me. Simply put, it's time for a new generation of leaders to emerge and guide this region into the future," he said in the message, which is accompanied by a photo of himself and his wife, Barbara Yaroslavsky, campaigning for the City Council at age 26.
The announcement leaves the race unchanged, with City Council members Eric Garcetti and Jan Perry, City Controller Wendy Greuel and radio host Kevin James among the field of candidates. Villaraigosa will be forced out in June 2013 due to term limits.
Shopping mall developer Rick Caruso still has not said whether he will run.
